A. Dwight MacGillivray

Born In: Sydney

Passed in: Dartmouth
Passed on: July 28th, 2013

Dwight MacGillivray of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully with his loving wife and son by his side on Sunday, July 28, 2013.
Born in Sydney, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Marjorie (Doyle) MacGillivray and Leonard MacGillivray.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Bernadine 'Deanie' (Yates) MacGillivray and much loved son of whom he was so proud, Dr. Leonard Richard MacGillivray of Iowa City, Iowa; Leonard's wife Dr. Kathryn Cox; loved and treasured grandchildren, Philip (age: 7), Lynden (5), and Sheridan (1).
Dwight was a Cape Bretoner, born and raised in Sydney. He graduated from the Business College in Sydney and worked in Sydney for many years until the family moved to Dartmouth. Dwight continued working for decades in the Halifax Metro Area. Although by training an 'office man', in more recent years he went to a different type of full-time job and he enjoyed 'the challenge'. Dwight looked forward to the variety of each day and the opportunity to chat with many folks along his route. As he liked to say, "I retired to the job, not from it."
A talented pianist, Dwight could make a piano rock with music from the 50s and 60s in particular. This was a musical talent that was a legacy in the MacGillivray family, passed along to him by his father. Dwight's son and grandchildren have continued the musical interest.
Dwight's childhood in Cape Breton was filled with great family adventures and family trips across North America were memorable. There were many years of fun times at 'the bungalow' in Point Michaud, where summers always promised (and delivered) a steady stream of family, friends, and memorable times.
Deanie expresses special thanks to great neighbours and friends Marilyn and Norman Penney, and their son Eric, who assisted Dwight and Deanie anytime they needed anything. Thanks are also expressed to neighbor Dan Bentley.
Dwight will be sadly missed by his Aunt Romayne Waye, Port Hawkesbury; his cousin, Gerard Morrow and family, Sydney; as well as Deanie's sisters, Lee and Brenda, their families, and many cousins.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home. The funeral mass, followed by a reception, will be held at Saint Vincent de Paul Parish, 320 Flying Cloud Dr., Dartmouth on Friday, August 2nd at 11:30 a.m. A visitation will precede the mass and will take place in the Sophia Room at St. Vincent de Paul Parish from 10-11:30 a.m.
Family flowers only. Donations in Dwight's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one's choice.
