Of Valleyfield, Bonavista North. Passed peacefully away at his daughter’s residence in Conception Harbour on July 28th, 2013, at the age of 93, surrounded by his loving family. Son of the late Stewart and Bessie (Bragg) Barbour. Left to mourn the loss are his devoted wife Margaret of 64 years, daughters: Judy (Donald) Snook in Conception Hr, Robyn (David) Beaudry in Portugal Cove - St. Philips, sons: David (Christine) Barbour in Portugal Cove-St Philips, and James (Alwyn) Kean in Harbour Grace; grandchildren: Erica (Michiel), Deirdre (Glenn), Dayna (Kyle), Michael (Lisa), Valerie (Steven), Donna ( Robert) and Michelle (Tony); 10 great- grandchildren: sister Lurley (Brown) and brother Joseph. Predeceased by parents-in-law: Jacob and Margaret (Burry) Attwood, sisters: Evelyn, Jean, Vivien, and brother Clayton. Sam was born in Safe Harbour and grew up following the traditions of logging and fishing. After Service, he would be involved with the seal fishery, or on his own long-liner ‘James and Kathleen’, or on experimental fishing vessels such as ‘The Investigator’. He was employed by the Federal and Provincial Fishery Departments as ‘Skipper’ on trawlers such as the ‘ Straight Shore’, ‘Sand Lance’, ‘Blue Hake’ and ‘Oderin’. After retirement he lived a quiet and contented life with his wife, and imparted life skills to his grandchildren - always setting an example for others, and being a well respected person in the community. At his request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Kittiwake Funeral Home, Pound Cove between 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 1st; and between 10 - 12 a.m. on Friday, August 2nd. To celebrate his life, a service will be held at Memorial United Church, Valleyfield on Friday, August 2nd at 2 p.m. with Rev. Brian Hannon officiating. No flowers by request.
