Elvin Reid

REID, Elvin Lewis “Lewie” – 86, Crowes Mills, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday evening, July 28, 2013, at Cedarstone Enhanced Care. Our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to our wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle, but we take comfort in knowing he is in the arms of God. Born September 15, 1926, in Camden, Colchester County, he was a son of the late Lewis and Alice (MacKenzie) Reid. Lewie worked at Irving Oil for many years as a service technician and after retirement, he worked on his own for a number of years. He used to visit various nursing homes on weekends, bringing a large bag of candy with him to share, and was affectionately known as “The Candy Man”. He loved horses, his Farmall Tractor and being in the woods enjoying the beauty of God’s creation. Lewie is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Hilda Mae (Otterson); daughters, Shirley Armsworthy (Lester Wyllie), Belmont; Linda Lindsay (Walter Tingley), Crowes Mills; Reta (Manny) Pynn, Onslow Mountain; Susie Reid, Crowes Mills; Nancy Pratt, West North River; grandchildren, Kim Lindsay, Dusty Lindsay (Joanne Culgin), John (Debbie) Lindsay, Guy “Rocky” (Cathy) Staples, Naomi Staples (Tim Biggin), Shelley (Chuck) Turner, Kevin Pynn (Kerry Spicer), Brennan, (Rhonda) Pratt, Natalie Pratt (Terry Isenor); several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sisters, Carol Smith, Bible Hill; Phyllis Schenk, Texas; Allie (Harold) Eckhardt, Mary Lou (Ken) Fletcher, Ontario; brothers, Carl (Brenda) Reid, Valley; Gordon (Sylvia) Reid, Harmony; Phillip Reid, British Columbia; sisters-in-law, Ruth Reid, Brule; Eileen Stephanowski, Los Angeles; brother-in-law, Earl Otterson, Crowes Mills; several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Judy Buchanan; sons-in-law, Ivan Armsworthy, Geordie Lindsay; sisters, Joan Reid, Betty Baird; twin brother, Eldridge Reid; brothers, Fred Reid, Jackie Reid, Victor Reid, Donald Reid, Irvin Reid; one sibling in infancy; half-brother, Earl MacKenzie. Special thanks are extended to all the doctors that cared for him over the years and during his illness and also to the wonderful staff at Cedarstone Enhanced Care (Eden Hall) for the care and compassion shown to Lewie and his family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Lewie’s family will receive friends from 1-1:45 p.m., Thursday, August 1, 2013, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m., Reverend Cory Somers officiating. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Lewie’s memory to Colchester Food Bank or Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia are welcomed.
