COX, Alvin Henley, 101, Shelburne, passed away at Roseway Manor on Sunday, August 4, 2013. Born in Shelburne on October 10, 1911, he was a son of the late Alvin John and Sedella (Henley) Cox. Having received his early education at Shelburne, he embarked upon a seafaring career which included employment with Canadian National Steamships Passenger Service, the Imperial Oil Company, the Gypsum Packet Company and the Isthmian Steam Lines as a Port Steward. A veteran of the Second World War, he served with the USA Army Air Force and saw action in the India, Burma, China campaign. Honorably discharged with the rank of Sargent in 1947, he eventually returned home and was employed at the Nova School for Boys at Shelburne until his retirement. In his younger years he was active in the Kiwanis and was a charter member of the Shelburne County Golf Club. Alvin was predeceased by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Purney) Dunn and siblings, Ernest, Alice (Williams), Annie (MacKinnon), Matthew and Robert. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth (Nicholas) Pippy, Shelburne and Mary (Wallace) Woodward, Hammond Plains; 10 grandchildren, Steven (Patty), Michael (Christine), Andrea (Richard), Jonathan, Shannon (Dylan), Jeffrey (Vanessa), and 12 great-grandchildren, Brendan, Alexandra, Ashlyn, Meaghan, Hayley, Brogan, Ian, Rebecca, Zoe, Ruth, Virginia and Jason. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. There will be no service upon Alvin’s request.
