ANTIGONISH/LISMORE – Margaret J. MacDonald, Dec. 26, 1924 – September 16, 2013.
Margaret, of Scarboro Dr., Antigonish, formerly of Lismore, passed away Monday, September 16, 2013 in St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish, where she had been since her stroke on April 18.
She was a daughter of the late Alex L. and Isabella (MacDonald) MacGillivray, of Baileys Brook.
Waiting for her in heaven, besides her parents, are her late husband F. Jerome MacDonald, her brothers Duncan (Mary) MacGillivray and Bill (Frances) MacGillivray.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Henry Anderson, Avondale. She is also survived by “10 special nephews and nieces”, who were essentially her children: Barry Anderson, Maccan; David (Paulette) Anderson, Plymouth; Michael (Jean) Anderson, Avondale; Elliott Anderson, Antigonish; Karen (Paul) LeBlanc, Avondale; Janet (Duncan) Matheson, Fredericton; Rosalie (George) Frazee, Avondale; John Darryl MacGillivray, Halifax; Marie (Joe) Marr, Foxbrook; Peter MacGillivray, Merigomish; sisters-in-law: Joan MacInnis and Jean MacDonald, California; Ruth MacDonald, Detroit; “the best neighbour in the world” Phil George; her God children: David, Mary Rita, Catrin Marta, Anne Marie, Matthew, Jeremiah, Bryan and Anthony Bowie (deceased).
Margaret worked at the Gun Shop in Trenton, Simpson Sears and later at Maritime Medical Care and M.S.I. Margaret loved bowling until she tried curling, which became her passion. She started with the Westville Curling Club and continued with the Anchorage Curling Club in Alaska, where she won the State Championship, and represented the U.S.A. several times. She also curled in eight Canadian provinces and five European countries where she and Jerome would attend the “Silver Broom” (World Curling Championships). Margaret had been inducted into the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame in 1999 and was honoured there again in 2006. She served as Secretary of the Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame; was Past Treasurer Lismore and District Community Centre; member of Merigomish and District Volunteer Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary and other community organizations. Although she was gifted at many arts and crafts, while in Alaska, she learned the “Bunka” (Japanese embroidery). She made many bunka pictures over the years, given to a chosen few, some sold, all loved.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Thursday from St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Lismore, with Father Colin MacKinnon officiating. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame East River Road, New Glasgow.
