We announce with great sorrow the death of Dan V. MacDonald of Table Head, Glace Bay at the QE II Hospital in Halifax on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.
Daniel was born in Dominion on Jan. 14, 1932, the son of Joseph MacDonald 'Joe the Mayor' and Sadie Black.
Dan V. is survived by his son, 'PJ' (Michele); his grandchildren, Khelsea, Kaleigh and Jake; sisters, Mary Gillis and Joyce MacLean; brothers, Charles (Sharon) and Gregory (Jeannette).
Besides his parents, Dan V. was predeceased by his wife, Rita Gabriel 'Tissie', his brother, John F. and sister, Ann Lorraine.
Dan V. was involved in the building trades all his life. He was a member of Carpenters Local 1588 for 62 years. In his early years he worked for local and national companies in Cape Breton and in various parts of Canada.
In partnership with his friend Charlie MacIntyre (Chardan Construction), he participated in many significant construction projects in Industrial Cape Breton. He was particularly proud of his work on the Field House at CBU, the Bayplex in Glace Bay, the Lingan Power Plant, Atlantic Superstores as well as the airport in Bermuda. His workers considered him demanding but fair.
Dan V. will be remembered as a private man, dedicated to his family and generous to St. Leo’s parish. He had a keen sense of humour and a wry wit. He was a wordsmith and welcomed the challenge of the New York Times crossword puzzle.
Visitation will take place at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, on Sept. 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church with Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
