STELLARTON – Donald James Dunlop, 98, formerly of Stellarton.
The family of Don are saddened to announce his passing in the Northumberland Veterans Unit in Pictou on Tuesday, October 1, 2013.
Dad was born in Lyons Brook and raised in Pictou, the only child of the late Arch and Elsie (Dickson) Dunlop.
He served in the Air Force in World War II from 1942-1945. He was employed with the CNR for 37 years in Stellarton where he met and married Viola (MacLean) MacKay and they raised their family. Dad was a quiet and unassuming man with a dry sense of humour. He loved to tinker and fix things. His zest for life was his cottage in Granton where many passionate hours were spent gardening.
Left to mourn are Mary (Garry) Lewis, Pictou; Doug (Shirley) Dunlop, New Glasgow; Allan (Stacey) Dunlop, North Carolina; Nancy MacInnis (Art Sinclair), Westville; Ann (Graham) Ross, Stellarton; David (Susan) Dunlop, New Glasgow. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Don was predeceased by his wife Vi, a daughter Jean in infancy and a grandson Ivan MacInnis.
The family will receive visitors from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. on Friday in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton from where a memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. with Rev. Charles McPherson presiding. A reception will follow in the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Brookside Cemetery.
Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of Don may be made to the Pictou County Food Bank, the Salvation Army or the Northumberland Veterans Unit, Pictou, would be appreciated.
