It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Hector Riga, 87, of Glace Bay, who died Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Thomas and Stella (Pucci) Riga.
Hector was a respected gentleman and businessman. In 1950, he opened Riga's Spaghetti Shop, and later, the Skyline Club. A tragic fire destroyed these businesses in 1970. In 1973, Hector built and opened the Marconi House Beverage Room and Grill and operated it until his retirement.
Hector was a spiritual, gentle and loving man who appreciated and nurtured his faith, family and friends. He took great pride in his grandchildren. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus and was privileged to have served in Pope John Paul's Papal Honor Guard in 1984.
Left to mourn his passing are his loving wife of 59 wonderful years, Kaye (Catherine MacEachern),; children, Stella (Cha) Keliher, Anne (Brian) Snow and John (Monique); and grandchildren, CJ, Ryan and Michael Keliher and Eric and Nicole Snow. He is also survived by his brother, Archie; sisters-in-law, Mary and Mary C. MacEachern; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hector was predeceased by his parents, his son, Paul, in infancy, brother, John 'Pete'. and sister, Clara.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18 in St. Anne's Church. The Rev Norman MacPhee will be officiating. A reception to follow. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay.
