Acker, Mary E. - With sadness in our hearts we announce the passing of Mary on November 5th, 2013. Mary lived most of her adult life in Kentville, NS. Born on May 15th, 1939 in Middleton, NS, Mary was the daughter of the late Hugh and Helen Langille. Mary was married to her loving husband and best friend George Acker for 56 years. She was a Past President, Ladies Division, of the Glooscap Curling Club, Past President of the Nova Scotia Mixed Curling Association and Chairperson of the Nova Scotia Provincial Lassies held at the Glooscap Curling Club. Until her retirement Mary was employed with Scotia Greenhouses Ltd. She had also worked with Dominion Stores Ltd., Young’s Lunch and Marvin Armstrong Greenhouses Ltd. Mary took great pride in her home and family. In the fall she enjoyed picking apples. Her passion though was curling both as a spectator and on the ice. She was a fiery competitor on the curling sheet as well as at the dining room table playing board games or cards. Mary was a talented knitter, an avid reader and was blessed with a green thumb. She loved to be outside working in her gardens or lounging with a good book. Back yard bird watching and feeding the birds was a favourite pastime and the sighting of cardinals at her feeders was a true delight for Mary. Mary’s pride and joy were her three boys. Brian (Christie), Toronto; David (Nancy), Kentville and Laurie (Joyce), New Glasgow. An infant son Kevin Michael predeceased her. She was a wonderful, loving grandmother to seven grandchildren and great grandmother to two. Mary is survived by her sisters Joan (Courtney) Sanford, Grafton; Eleanor (Gordon) Greeno, New Minas; bothers Laurie (Helen) Langille, Seely’s Bay, Ont; Hugh Jr., Gananoque, Ont. A sister Shirley and brothers Eugene and Douglas predeceased her. Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation by request. A celebration of Mary’s life was held on Saturday, November 16th at 1 p.m. at the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, NS. Interment at Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, NS, following a reception. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
