The death occurred at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Tuesday, September 30, of Doug Payne, dear husband and cherished best friend of Karen Birchard. Proud father of Michael (Lynn) of Winnipeg, Elizabeth, and Sam of Vancouver. Loving son of W. James Payne, Richmond Hill, and beloved brother of David, Toronto. Proud grandfather of Rileigh and Samantha in Winnipeg and Cade in Vancouver. Sadly missed by cousin Nina DeShane in Cambridge, and brothers-in-law Tom Birchard (Mary Anne) of Toronto and Keith Birchard (Diana Baird), Silver Spring, MD., and sister-in-law Monica Kington (Richard), Burlington. Doug was a very special uncle to Kyle, Meghan and Garrett Birchard of Toronto and the twins, Chris and Alex Birchard, in Silver Spring. Predeceased by his mother, Kathleen, and sister-in-law, Linda. A national and international journalist, broadcaster and writer, Doug was also blessed with many good friends for whom he was very grateful, as well as professional colleagues who made working a joy. Details for a celebration of his life will be announced later.
