TRENTON/NEW GLASGOW – John David Conrad, age 88, formerly of Trenton and New Glasgow, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013 in Valley View Villa, Riverton.
Born November 15, 1925 in Trenton, he was a son of the late Richard and Mary (Fanning) Conrad.
Educated in Trenton, he served with the Canadian Navy from 1943-1945. He entered the plumbing trade in 1946, and was employed with McKay Plumbing and Heating, Hayman’s Plumbing and Heating and Scott Maritimes and received his certification in Plumbing, Pipefitting and Steam Fitting. He enjoyed softball, bowling and golf and was a member of the Abercrombie Golf Club. He was a member and served on the executive of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29 and the executive of the Trenton Athletic Association. He entered civic affairs, serving on many committees, including 14 years as town councillor and school board member in Trenton. He was most proud of the 11 years as School Board Chairman under three mayors. His wife Margaret and family were the most important things to him. John loved people, and was always happy to have a chat and tell stories.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret (Lemal) Conrad; daughter, Margo (Conrad) Marsh (Lorne); grandchildren: Joel, Adam, Jenna, and great-grandson, Adam Jr.; brother, Robert Conrad (Norma).
He was predeceased by a daughter, Christine (Conrad) Hayward; three brothers and one sister.
At John’s request cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service. A family burial will be held in Hillside Cemetery.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Red Cross.
Arrangements are under the direction of the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
