Catherine Peters
PETERS, CATHERINE - 1921 - 2013 - With great sadness we mourn the passing of Catherine Campbell Peters of The Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home who passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2013. Catherine was born on Sept. 22, 1921 in Donkin, Nova Scotia to parents, Gus and Anna (MacDonald) MacCuish. She was always very proud of her Cape Breton heritage. Catherine is survived by her children, Eric (Carmen), Anna, Bill, Mary (Ed) Daley, Jeanne (Len) Flanagan and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Surviving in-laws include Donald and Sue MacVicar, Ruth and Howard Mackinnon and Audrey and Michael Butler. Catherine was predeceased by her husband, William E. (Bill) Peters, daughter, Cathy, her brother, Roderick MacCuish and his wife Jean and her brother in-law James MacVicar and his wife Anne. Catherine dedicated her life to her family, her church, the students she served as a teacher and administrator and to the teaching profession through the N.B.T.A. Her teaching career began in Glace Bay, Cape Breton and continued locally when she and Bill moved to Moncton in 1956. She taught at Victoria, Sunny Brae and Pleasant Street Schools and served as Principal of Pleasant Street School. She was a loyal and active member and served as a director of the N.B.T.A. She was also very active with the local branch and, at one time, served as president. She was a recipient of the Centennial Award recognizing her service. She also served as a member of the Public Service Labor Relations Board. Before being physically limited, Catherine was also an active member of Humphrey Memorial United Church. She was a C.G.I.T. leader, a Sunday School teacher and a leader and director at Camp Ta Wa Si. Her church activities also included the U.C.W. and Presbytery. To all her activities she brought a quick wit, a sense of humor and a dedication to the task at hand. She never shied from responsibility and had an aptitude and desire for leadership roles. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Visions United Church Memorial Fund, the Canadian Diabetic Association or a charitable organization of the donor’s choice.
There will be an evening of visitation on Friday from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Rd., Riverview (869-2007). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 1:00pm from Cobb’s Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. Christine MacLeod officiating.
