Valerie Horne

HORNE, VALERIE - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Valerie Marie Horne at Pine Grove Nursing Home in Fredericton on December 8, 2013. Also known to most family and friends as Val or Vallie, she was born in Lapland, NS on April 5, 1924, the eldest daughter of the late George and Viola Crouse. Val was predeceased by her husband Herbert Alexander in 1990, her eldest son Philip Andrew in 2009, and her brother Eric in 2012. Following her marriage, Val was a military wife devoted to maintaining a stable home for her family. She made friends in Whitehorse, Saint John, and Oromocto before they retired to the Fundy shores of Dipper Harbour in 1971. She left her beloved home there in 2007 to move back to Oromocto and most recently, to Pine Grove Nursing Home in Fredericton. Val treasured her friends and “digging in the dirt”: she was a fabulous knitter and loved to make things from scratch, especially when it came to baking. She was always up for a game of cards, a trip to anywhere, and a good political discussion. Valerie is survived by two daughters; Glenda Hardie (Andrew) of Fredericton and Jane Livingstone (Don Glaspy) of Upper Queensbury, and a son Paul (Joan) of Prelate, Sask. She also leaves five grandchildren; Scott Hardie and Beth Simon (Darcy) of Fredericton and Allie, Kate, and Ben of Prelate. Her great grandchildren are Madeline, Kelsey, and Lucy Simon. Valerie is also survived by her sister Shirley Anderson (Glen) of Halifax, sisters-in-law Phyllis Campbell of Mahone Bay and Viola Crouse of Bridgewater, NS and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of Pine Grove for their outstanding care and attention to our Mom in these final months. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be held at the Fallsview Chapel of Castle Funeral Homes, 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John at 1 pm on Friday, December 13, 2013 with family friend John Carroll officiating. Interment will take place at Maces Bay Cemetery.
