PUTNAM, Gene Raymond – 73, Masstown, passed away peacefully, surrounded by those he loved, on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at home. He left his family at milking time as a true dairy and later beef farmer who was proud of his two sons who followed in his footsteps. Born August 17, 1940, he was a son of the late Albert A. and Gladys M. (Rath) Putnam.
Gene was a farmer dedicated to his herd – and to his family. He is survived by his wife, Ellen (Akerman); four children, Owen, Debert; Janet, Truro; Mary (Aaron) Smith, Glenholme; Evan (Paula), Masstown; proud grandfather to Jenna, Olivia, Maria, Colton, Clara, Chloe, Alyssa, Morgan, Madelyn and Gavin; sisters, Reta (Roy Langille), Onslow; Marina Fisher, Masstown; Carole (Norman) Evans, Tappen, British Columbia, brother, Lorne (Letitia), Masstown, sister-in-law, Claudia Putnam, Hart Lake; several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Gene was predeceased by his brother, Merle; nephew, Mark Fisher; niece, Elizabeth Akerman; brother-in-law, Gerald Fisher. A sports enthusiast, Gene enjoyed baseball, but most especially playing hockey with the West Colchester Old Timers. He was a hardworker and a true family man, carrying those traits well beyond his own family. The family offers special thanks to the VON, Palliative Care and to Dr. Douglas and Chantel Bishop with the Senior’s Clinic. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, December 16, 2013, in Masstown United Church, Carol Gillard, M.Div. officiating. Reception to follow in the church basement. Spring interment in Masstown Cemetery. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Gene’s memory to the Senior’s Clinic (CEH Health Authority), Masstown United Church or a charity of choice are welcomed.
