Sophie Sweetland
Passed on: December 22nd, 2013
Sophie Sweetland passed peacefully away December 22, 2013 following a very long and courageous battle with leukemia and after successfully fighting breast cancer. Sophie was born in Old Perlican, Newfoundland, and was the daughter of Captain Max and Helen Grace Rodgers. Predeceased by brother David. She leaves to mourn her beloved husband Clarence, daughter Nancy Tremblay, sons Greg (Jackie) and Ken, cherished grandchildren Michael and Joel Tremblay and Jackson and Avelyn Sweetland as well as brothers Paul (Kay) and Lindo Rodgers and nephews Paul, Chris and David Rodgers and niece Denise Snow. Sophie worked as a Secretary at an automotive dealership after completing high school and a business course but devoted her efforts to her children and family for many years, working part-time when the children were older. She was dedicated to her family, a lady in every sense of the word. She dearly loved her four grandchildren and was always there for them, especially helpful to Nancy when the twins were babies. Sophie was a parishioner of St. John The Baptist Anglican Church in Riverview where she taught Sunday school, served on the Altar Guild and the Ladies Parish Guild as well as supported other groups and activities in the Church. She served as Secretary for the Moncton Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society for two years and assisted in the annual Carnation Campaign for that organization for several years. Sophie was active in the community and had many friends in her exercise group, the local chapter of TOPS and the Breast Cancer Support Group. She cherished her walks with Clarence in the local parks in the Summer and Fall. She missed her Newfoundland home but did spend an enjoyable week there in August visiting relatives and friends. Sophie will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends. Special thanks to Doctors and staff of the Oncology Department and the Oncology Clinic of the Moncton Hospital for the excellent care provided during her illness. Donations in Sophie's memory may be made to The Friend's of the Moncton Hospital, The Canadian Cancer Society or St. John The Baptist Anglican Church Building Fund. Visitation at Cobb's Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Road, Riverview (869-2007) on Friday, December 27th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
