Gerard "Jerry" Poirier

POIRIER, GERARD "JERRY" - Gerard “Jerry” Poirier, 87, of Moncton, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Friday, January 3, 2014. Born January, 21, 1926, in Rosaireville, NB, he was the son of the late Joe and Josephine (Gallant) Poirier. In 1945, at the age of 19, he joined the Merchant Navy in Saint John, NB, near the end of the Second World War. In 1950, at the age of 24, Gerard moved to Toronto, ON, where he took a welding course, he then worked for the Ontario Iron Workers and then as a Millwright. He met and married the love of his life, Edmee Doucet and they had 4 beautiful children. The family returned to NB in 1977 and took up residence in Moncton, where he worked briefly with CNR before retiring with Apex Industries. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, walking daily at Champlain Mall, country music, clogging, line dancing and oil painting. Gerard will be sadly missed by his wife of over 56 years, Edmee (Doucet) Poirier; his loving children, Diane Poirier of Lethbridge, AB, Robert Poirier of Moncton, Deborah Anne “Debbie” Allain of Moncton; seven grandchildren, Timothy Joseph “T.J.” Saulnier, Jason Saulnier, Justin Allain, Megan Purnell, Bonnie Smith, Jake Poirier and Jessica Poirier and one great grandchild, Harper Sage Purnell. He is survived by one brother, Jacques Poirier (Doris) of Rogersville and his sister, Julie Bourque of Rogersville; several nieces, nephews and extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, James “Jim” Poirier; brothers, Louis and Lionel Poirier.
Resting at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) with visitation hours on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Moncton Legion Branch #6 Veteran’s Service will be held Wednesday at 4:00 pm. Funeral Mass to be celebrated at Notre Dame-de-Grâce Roman Catholic Church (854 Mountain Rd.) on Thursday, January, 9, 2014 at 11:00 am with Rev. Jean-Guy Dallaire officiating. Reception in the Church Hall following the Mass. Interment will be held in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Dieppe, in the spring.
