The family of Phyllis (Nash) Musgrave regret to announce her death which occurred on Jan. 17, 2014, at The Northside Community Guest Home.
She had been a resident of North Sydney for almost all of her life until moving to the Guest Home in February of 2010.
Her death happened as a result of declining health over the past 10 years. Phyllis was the daughter of the late Jack and Ruth (Lamey) Nash.
Phyllis was a proud graduate of Thompson High School, class of 1964. She attended Nova Scotia Teachers College for two years and began her teaching career at 20 years of age. She later upgraded her teaching licence to a TC 5 which was equivalent to a Bachelor of Education. Phyllis was a talented, dedicated and much loved teacher at Balls Creek Elementary for 32 years.
Her Thanksgiving dinners which she organized with the parents are fondly remembered by all involved. She was always one to be deeply involved in the many concerts that occurred at Balls Creek Elementary. Following her retirement in 1998, she was a substitute teacher in the Northside area schools for approximately two years but had to stop due to poor health.
Entertaining was a major part of her life and Christmas was her favourite day of the year. Phyllis was a fantastic cook and loved to feed as many people as she could fit into the family home. She decorated the home for every holiday, including Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Thanksgiving. There are not many crafts that Phyllis did not try and sewing was the one in which she excelled. Her ultimate creation was a wedding dress that she made for her sister-in-law, Anne. Phyllis had a real gift for gardening.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of 45 years, Ray; and her three sons, Stuart (Erin) Moncton, David (Anne) Oshawa, and Stephen (Michelle), Toronto. She is survived by brothers, Walter (the late Minnie) Nash of Innisfil, Ont., and Graham (Marie) Nash of Pembroke, Ont.
She is also survived by the extended Musgrave family of which she was a vital part. Surviving Phyllis are sisters-in-law, Gertie (Ron) Cumming, Kingston, Ont., Ollie (Bud) Atkinson, Edmonton, Alta., Bev (David) Aker, Sydney Mines, Gwen (Ernie) O’Neill, Frenchvale, Shirley Stamper, Scotchlake, Anne (Tommy) LeBlanc, Big Bras d’Or, Cindy (John) Britten, Sydney; brothers-in-law, Wayne (Gloria), Balls Creek, Gary (Paulette), St. Thomas, Ont., Lou (The late Lois), Scarborough, Ont., Gordie (Susan), New Glasgow, and Joe (Marguerite), Frenchvale.
Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Ruth (Lamey) Nash in 1971 and 1973 respectfully. She was also predeceased by her sister, Carol (the late Arnold) Roach and a sister in infancy, her brother-in-law, Russell (survived by Mabel) and sister-in-law, Lenna (the late Brian) MacDougall.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Kirkpatrick and his staff for the wonderful care provided to Phyllis during her years of illness. Special thanks to the staff of Munro Place at the Northside Community Guest home for their nurturing care of Phyllis during her stay.
Visitation for Phyllis will take place from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral will be held 3 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22 at St. John’s Anglican Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Internment will take place in Lakeside Cemetery at a later date.
