Bertha Benedict of Meadows Road, Sydney Forks, passed away Jan. 26, 2014, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney with daughter Paulette at her side.
Bertha is survived by her husband of 68 years, Paul Benedict and her five children, Doug (Marie) Benedict, Truro, Paulette (John) Corbett, Sydney Forks, Pauline (Don) Mitton, Halifax, David (Ann) Benedict, Sydney Forks, and Rebecca Benedict (Paul Devlin), Bowden, Alta.; 11 grandchildren, Kimberley (Jean Claude Beaudry) Benedict, Catherine Benedict, Janet (Ryan) Sommers, Carolyn (Garett) Nickelo, Heather (Tige) Procyshyn, Peter Mitton, Allison Corbett (Kirk Oliver), Michael Corbett, Cheryl Benedict, Steven (Rachel) Chiasson and David (Karolyn) Chiasson; great-grandchildren, Matthieu, Jacob, Liam (Beaudry) Benedict, Benedict, Atticus Sommers, Morgan, Callen, Amy Procyshyn, Avery Sydney Chiasson, Thomas Rennee, Jacob Chiasson, Cody Corbett and Carson Oliver.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was predeceased by parents, Hubert and Ivy Jackson, Sydney River, twin brother, Douglas, brothers, Gordon, John, Edward and Ralph Jackson and sisters, Clara Ross and Isabel Novak. She was also predeceased by infant granddaughter, Nancy Nicole Benedict.
With a strong sense of self-reliance and determination, Bertha was one of those who didn’t complain, she just worked a little harder. Her lifelong hobby was textile crafts created for her family and others. She started knitting for Second World War troops and ended knitting for children of a Sydney school. Her family have a wealth of crocheted, tatted, quilted, hooked and knitted items from her never still hands. She and Paul enjoyed visits with family and friends especially during the years they wintered in Florida. Everyone enjoyed the taste and smell of her homemade bread and a cup of tea.
The family extends thanks to the staff of the Creative Care Unit of the Cove Guest Home for their compassionate end of life care for Bertha.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be held at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment at a later date.
