Lucy Hubbard

HUBBARD, LUCY - It is with great sadness the family of Lucy Elizabeth McKenzie Hubbard announces her passing on January 27th 2014 at The Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton N.B. Born on November 12th 1920 in Pelly, Saskatchewan, Lucy was the daughter of the late Elizabeth and William Black. Proud of her grandfather EAWR McKenzie’s role in the founding of the Village of Pelly, Lucy enjoyed researching family histories in all directions, with gusto. Lucy received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and History from the University of Manitoba in 1941 and later a Bachelor of Education Degree from The University of New Brunswick in 1968. She taught at The Netherwood School for Girls in Rothesay, and later at Fredericton High School. From 1981 to 1985, Lucy joined the provincial public service as administrative officer with the New Brunswick Bicentennial Commission, which she enjoyed as ‘a most interesting job’. Her work life began at the Bank of Montreal in Winnipeg in 1941 for one year, then moving in 1942 to the Department of Munitions and Supply in Ottawa, Canada's principal agency coordinating domestic industry during World War II, where she met her future husband. Lucy was a woman of strong faith: as a member of Christ Church Parish Church she was very active in the church community. Lucy was an engaging conversationalist who enjoyed a round of golf, a game of bridge and from time to time a glass of merlot. The ultimate host she graciously opened her home to friends and family. As the communication hub of the extended family, Lucy maintained a schedule of notable dates and was always in touch for birthdays and other occasions through cards, letters, telephone and e-mail. She was a member of The Third Age Center, The Beaverbrook Art Gallery, The Fredericton Regional Museum, The Fredericton Golf Club, The University Alumnae, The Sunbury Historical Society and The United Empire Loyalists. Lucy married Lt. Frederick W. Hubbard in 1946. In addition to her husband she is survived by son Allen (Ronna) Hubbard of Quispamsis and daughter Elizabeth (Colin) Cantlie of Ottawa, and her grandchildren Christopher (Amy) Hubbard, Allison (Matthew) Savoy and Ashley Hubbard. Great-grandchildren Logan and Emmett Hubbard and William and Blair Savoy are her “darling hearts”. Lucy will be fondly remembered by nieces Margaret Karrel, Joyce Gordon, Janet Wilson and Sylvia Logie as well as nephews Matthew Black and Don Logie and their respective families. She was predeceased by a sister Amy Black, a brother William Black, sister in law Jean Black, brother in law Lt. Alleyne Hubbard, nephews Christopher Black and Robert Logie, brother in law William Logie and very recently sister in law Marion Logie. The family would like to thank all the care givers over the years who have helped make it possible for Lucy and Fred to live an independent life style and extend their heartfelt thanks to Lisa Arbeau for her compassion, care and gentle guidance. Lucy was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many and will be missed by all.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to McAdams Funeral Home. A celebration of Lucy’s life will take place February 5th 2:00 PM at Christ Church Cathedral, 168 Church Street Fredericton N.B. to be officiated by long-time friends The Rev. Canon T. A. Smith and The Rev. Canon John Sharpe. Donations in Lucy's memory may be made to Christ Church Parish Chapel Fund or The Stained Glass Window Fund or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
