Ferman James Furey, Glace Bay, passed away at the family home surrounded by his “three girls” — his Mom, Shirley, his sister, Annette and his soulmate, Andrea, on Jan. 28, 2014, at the age of 48 after a short courageous battle with cancer.
Ferman was born on June 13, 1965, son of the late Ferman Furey Sr. and Shirley (Arseneau) Furey.
He was an avid craftsman/carpenter and took great pride in everything he created. At the time of his diagnosis, he was employed at Meco Construction as a carpenter. He always enjoyed working with wood.
He was a very outgoing, dedicated, and caring guy. Ferman would do anything and everything for anyone. He wouldn’t care if he had a penny in his pocket; he would selflessly jump in and make sure things were taken care of.
He was a member of the Tower Road Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years, and held the position of deputy fire chief at the time of his death. One of his greatest achievements was saving a man’s life from a house fire while he was off duty for which he received the Governor General of Canada’s Commendation award for bravery. His response was “It’s a little overwhelming”.
In 1998-99 he was selected Fire Fighter of the Year at Tower Road. He was a very humble and modest man. He was a jack-of-all-trades. He was their cook, DJ, bartender, sign maker, carpenter, maintenance person, tour guide, and trainer, but most importantly was the ability to save lives and be a dedicated firefighter. He was so proud to be a part of all this!
Besides his mother, Shirley, he is survived by his only sister, Annette (Malcolm) Taylor of Oromocto, N.B.; his soulmate, Andrea Langille and two beautiful daughters, Joehanna Ward and Samantha Ward. It is with regret, his children were not able to be with their loving Dad in his hour of need. Our hearts are broken.
The family would like to extend thanks to all friends and family, whose love and endless support made dark days a little brighter. To the nurses, VON, Doctors, Palliative Care, and Red Cross, whose care and compassion made living with and treating the illness a little easier. They helped make Ferman’s wish to spend his final days in his home, with his family, a reality.
A wake will be held on Friday, Jan. 31 from 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, Union Street, Glace Bay. There will be a funeral mass held Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Main Street, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. The mass will include all Fireman honours. Reception to follow in the church foyer.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Tower Road Volunteer Fire Department, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
