John Young MacDonald

Born In: Glace Bay

Passed in: Glace Bay Sydney
Passed on: January 4th, 2014

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we, the family and friends mourn the passing of our gentle and loving John Y. MacDonald at the age of 50.
John lost his painful battle to COPD on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his loving family at his side.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Phyllis and the late Eddie 'Comet' MacDonald and was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay.
Our John had also been suffering from schizophrenia for nearly three decades. Before John became ill, he led a wonderful life doing what he loved, playing guitar, writing songs and enjoying life. John’s illness did not interfere with his compassion and love for others and anyone who was fortunate to meet John loved him instantly. He treated everyone with respect and dignity, but unfortunately he didn’t receive the same from some, yet he never complained.
John had a loving soul, the biggest heart and a beautiful mind.
John Y. will be missed by many; especially by his beautiful mom, Phyllis MacDonald (Gerard Gouthro); sons, J.J. Chant (Kerri Ann), Justin Chant and their mother Pam Chant; sisters, Deb (Brian) White, Dominion, Tracey (Ron) Campbell, Sydney; nieces and nephews, Jason (Amanda) White and baby Clark, Ryan (Michelle) White, Aaron White, Matthew Campbell, Connor Campbell, Leona (Jason) McVicar, Jacob McVicar, Breanna McVicar, Chris Kerr, Nevaeh Kerr, Wendy Kerr, Elijah, Heather (Kevin) Merrill and baby Ronan; Erika Kerr, Joel Peach, Kendra(Ross) MacVicar, Ashley MacDonald (Blair) and baby Cole.
John was predeceased by his Dad, Eddie 'Comet' MacDonald, sister, Wendie Muise, brother, Ken 'Cougar' MacDonald, brother-in-law, Brad Kerr, grandparents, Jack and Elizabeth 'Mamow' MacDonald and Harold and Edna Matthews.
There will be no public visitation for John MacDonald. A funeral service will be celebrated 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
Donations in John Y’s memory may be made to the Wendie Muise Foundation or a charity of choice.
