Edna Ponée (Burton)
Passed in: Sydney
Passed on: February 9th, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, sister, aunt and close friend, Edna Ponée, after a very full 93 years of life on Sunday, February 9, 2014.
Edna was born to Stanley and Elizabeth Burton and lived in Sydney most of her years, except for a decade spent in Ottawa.
She is survived by her son, Charles (Diane); sisters, Hilda Steele and Marjorie McIntyre; sisters-in-law, Louise Black, Lilian Sampson and Peggy Sunderland, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her two sons, Gary and Dale; husband, Charles Julien; siblings, Eleanor Lee, Dorothy Penney, Phyllis Burns, Norma Wadden, Melvin Burton, Wallace Burton and Stanley Burton; and her sisters-in-law, Jeanne Bonnell and Blanche Boyle.
Edna served as a devoted and eager volunteer, giving leadership in a number of Sydney organizations such as the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 12), Club 55, the Sydney Community Health Center Auxiliary and the Ladies’ Auxiliary of Our Lady of Fatima Church.
For a number of years through the 60s, 70s and 80s, she was employed at Woolco/Walmart and then enjoyed operating her home-based bed and breakfast in Cantley Village in the 90s, where she delighted her guests with fulsome breakfasts and a cheery disposition.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Ann’s Bay, Harbourstone Enhanced Care for their attentive and compassionate attention to Edna and her visitors, and also to Rose and Ken Paruch and family and Carole Ludyka, for their years of love, friendship and assistance.
There will be no visitation. However, a commemorative Mass followed by a reception will be held on Thursday 11 a.m. at Our Lady Fatima of Church, to celebrate Edna’s long, full and productive life. She will be missed.
Memorial donations can be made to Loaves and Fishes or the Children’s Wish Foundation.
