ESTEY, RALPH - Ralph Howard Estey peacefully passed away from pneumonia on January 31, 2014 at Lakeshore General Hospital, Pointe-Claire, Quebec. He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years Dorean Pridham, sons Ronald (Barbara) and Frank (Judy), seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Grace George. Ralph was born in a farmhouse in Millville, N.B. and as a young man he was a farmer, lumberjack, hobo, electrician, carpenter, prize fighter, machinist, and soldier in World War II. After the war, despite never having attended high school, he earned five university degrees and became a university professor and Chairman of the Department of Plant Pathology at McGill University. He retired from McGill University as an Emeritus Professor in Plant Science. He then worked as a consultant in plant diseases until retiring at age 94. He was a prolific writer of articles and books and was often a keynote speaker at conventions and ceremonies. Ralph was a philanthropist, mainly to McGill University and the University of Manitoba. He had a keen intellect and wit that persisted even into his final hours. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
