Douglas H. Allen

Allen, Douglas H. – 91, of Port Greville passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at the South Cumberland Community Care Center, Parrsboro. Born in Spencer’s Island, he was a son of the late Alonzo and Muriel (Borden) Allen. Douglas was a veteran of World War II. He was a retired construction worker and crane operator. Doug’s greatest joy in life was doing things that brought happiness to his family, friends and neighbors. He loved being surrounded by children, particularly his grandchildren, Ella and Garrett, who were the “apple of his eye.” He was well known throughout the area for his cake-making. Many people were pleasantly surprised to have Doug arrive at their door with a delicious cake for a special occasion. Often when plans were being made for special events in the community, the final phrase would be “…and Doug will make the cake.” He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Edith; a daughter, Shelley Tanner (Donald), Queensland; a son, Eric (Carolann), Fall River; a sister, Ruth Smith (Arthur), Amherst; sister in law, Margaret Allen, Amherst; granddaughter, Ella Tanner, Queensland; a grandson, Garrett, Fall River; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ella (DeWitt); a brother, Walter. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. today [Friday, February 14, 2014] at Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Funeral 2 p.m. on Saturday [February 15, 2014] at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Fox River, Rev. Tory Byrne officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the F.P.W.
