Catherine Estelle Saunders

SAUNDERS, Catherine Estelle – passed away peacefully, Saturday, February 15, 2014, at Willow Lodge Home for Special Care, Tatamagouche. Diagnosed with Lewy-Body disease about four years ago, she succumbed to it in her 87th year. Born in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, to the late George R. and Mary (Morse) Saunders, she attended Stellarton Public School, graduated from Stellarton High and then entered Dalhousie University, obtaining her Arts Degree in 1947. Her brother, George, graduated in Medicine, while her brother, James, in Arts and B.Com, degrees, the first time ever, at that time, when three from the same family graduated on the same day. The following year, Estelle received her Masters and then pursued her teaching career in Campbellton and Fredericton, New Brunswick, and then off to Quebec, first in Val d’Or, principal in Otterburn Park, followed by Head of History at Lindsay Place High School, Pointe Claire, Quebec. Estelle endeared herself to students and they to her. Before she retired, one student, Robert Peck, currently Canadian Ambassador to Greece, founded a scholarship in her name and it is presented each year to a worthy student. She was a teacher and an educator. Estelle leaves to mourn her brother George’s widow, Emily, Amherst, and their children, George Robert Saunders, Bruce (Diana) Saunders, Amherst; David Saunders, United States of America; Joan (Al) Gibson, Truro; brother, James (Jean) Saunders, Truro, and their children, Jamie (Gayle) Saunders, Bedford, and Catherine (Michael) Epstein, Richmond, British Columbia; cousins, Lawrence (Alfretta) Morse, John Morse, Harold (Vivian) Morse and Ruth Ann Harris, widow to the late Canon Emery Harris, all of Berwick; Gladys (Ian) Fraser, Toney River; James Harlow, Halifax; Anne (Charles) Cole, Orillia, Ontario; many great nieces and nephews. Prior to Estelle being in Willow Lodge, she was cared for most diligently and with love by Carol Ann Short and Phyllis Cox. (Newfoundland Ladies) In Willow Lodge, the staff gave undivided attention with care and understanding to Estelle and they were assisted by two loving care givers from Truro, Nita Sellars and Julie Dodge. Estelle was aware and alert to the effects of Lewy-Body disease and had indicated her wish to see that research will be done. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, February 20, 2014, Reverend Valerie Kingsbury of First United Church officiating. Reception will follow. Spring interment in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens, Alma. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Estelle’s memory to Lewy-Body Research, Dalhousie University, are welcomed.
