With dignity and understanding, but reluctance, on Thursday, October 23, 2008, in his 85th year. After a long and full life of public service and devotion to family, JT (long-time resident of Simcoe, Ont., and Brackley Beach, P.E.I.) faded away. Left to mourn his passing: cherished and devoted wife of 32 years, Julianne Moser West; beloved sons: Dr. Michael L. West and his wife, Lois of Halifax and Bryce Robertson West of Toronto. JT was the respected and loved stepfather of Lisa M. Burns Wilhelm and her husband, Gary of Toronto, James Brendan Burns and his wife, Alison Sinclair Burns of Vancouver, and Tara K. Burns and her husband, Tony Rodrigues of Toronto. JT will be especially missed by his seven beloved grandchildren: Alex and Maddie West of Halifax, J. Declan and Tamsyn Burns of Vancouver; Kate, Andrew and Isabelle Rodrigues of Toronto. JT was born in Vancouver, B.C., on October 30, 1923. He was the son of the late William A. West, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and the late Isabelle Robertson of Lucknow, Ont. He is survived by his younger brother, William R. West (Grace) and his nephew, William R. West Jr. (Lynn), all of Mississauga; as well as by his niece, Cathy MacDonald (Fraser) of Vancouver. He is predeceased by his only sister, Margaret West Rogers, of Vancouver. General West was an active community volunteer and chaired the Norfolk General Hospital Board for several years. Friends were invited to share their memories of JT with his family at the Jason Smith Funeral Chapel, Simcoe, where the service was held on Monday, October 27, 2008, with Rev. Jack Paleczny officiating. Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe. Memorial donations payable to the Norfolk General Hospital Foundation and the Kidney Foundation were gratefully acknowledged by the family.
