Joseph Alexander Gillis, 78, of Moncton, N.B., son of the late Charles and Harriet (Slaunwhite) Gillis, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, after a short illness.
Joseph was born in Dominion, Cape Breton, where he grew up until he joined the Armed Forces at the age of 18. He served his country for 26 years and was a Korean War veteran. He retired back in Cape Breton where he spent 32 years and worked as a Commissionaire in several different places. The last couple of years were spent living in Moncton. Joseph was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion and in his younger years, he enjoyed curling, darts, pool, golf, watching sports on TV and taking drives through the country.
Joseph was much loved by all who knew him; he always had a joke or story to tell and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends and never forgotten.
Survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Alexena (Jordan) Gillis; one son, Joseph (Darlene) Gillis of Orleans, Ont.; three daughters, Mary Trites (Larry) of Moncton, Kathy Belanger (Alain) of Woodlawn, Ont., and JoAnn Hafey (Wayne) of Milton, Ont.; eight grandchildren, Patti, Tony, Jennifer, Melanie, Greg, Charley, Sean and Julia; four great-grandchildren, Morgan, Katelyn, Alexina and Wesley; sisters, Frances Bailey and Helen Bailey of New Waterford, Cape Breton; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was predeceased by his son, Charles William and two brothers, Charles and William.
In keeping with Joseph’s wishes, there will be no visitation hours. Funeral service will be held at Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel, 1657 Mountain Rd., Moncton (506-858-1995) on Friday, May 16, 2014, at 2 p.m. Reception in the Funeral Home Reception Centre following the service.
