Karl Francis Roy Powell
Passed on: February 27th, 2014
Karl Francis Roy Powell (P.Eng.), 83, of Ottawa died February 27th, 2014. "Carl" passed peacefully in his sleep after a short battle with cancer. He was born in Deer Lake (Newfoundland) and was preceded in death by his parents Darius and Julia and his siblings: Clayton, Ellis, Jean and James. He is survived by two loving daughters, Elena and Jean, five grandchildren (Daniel, Vanessa, Jabez and Benjamin Arkaifie, and Samuel Cound), his ex-wife Maria Violeta, as well as nephews and nieces. In 1956, he graduated as a metallurgical engineer from the Technical University of NS (now Dalhousie) and worked for different organizations in Quebec, Venezuela and Newfoundland. He also worked as a Mines Inspector with the Newfoundland & Labrador government up until his retirement in 1996. Dad had worked in Buchans, Corner Brook and St. John's--and was a true Newfoundlander who strongly supported the proper use or protection of its natural resources. In St. John's, he was a frequent commentator on open-mike radio shows. Dad your work ethic, principles, logic and sense of humour will be missed. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, March 6, at 7 pm at First United Church (in the chapel), 347 Richmond Road, Ottawa. Special thanks to the caring staff of the General and Elisabeth Bruyère hospitals.
