It is with deep sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of Hugh D. Ramsey, 77, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Northside General Hospital with his family by his side.
Born in North Sydney, Hugh was the son of the late David H. and Harriet (Benoit) Ramsey.
Hugh began his working life as a driver for Snow White Laundry and Dry Cleaners, later working as a dry cleaner, then in the credit department at Woodhouse Furniture in Sydney. Subsequently, he spent a number of years as a screen printer with his brother at Ramsey Signs in Sydney and worked at Walmart in Sydney until his retirement in 2001. Hugh was a faithful and active member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney where he served for 33 years as a lay reader, Eucharistic minister, crucifer, co-ordinator of servers, a member of the Fellowship Group, a minister of home communion and member of the parish council.
Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Margie; his daughter, Rev. Lori Ramsey (Robert Cullen), Truro; his son, Terry (Sherry) Ramsey, Sydney Mines; his four treasured grandchildren, Emily and Mark Ramsey, Hannah and Sarah Cullen; his sister, Marie McCormick, Hagersville , Ont.; brothers, Eugene (Jean) Ramsey, Sydney Mines, Bill (Brenda) Ramsey, Berwick, Harold (Pearl) Ramsey, Sydney, Carl Ramsey, North Sydney, Glenn (Royce) Ramsey, Halifax, and many special nieces and nephews who played a large part in his life.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Ronald, a brother and sister in infancy and a brother-in-law, John McCormick.
Hugh was very grateful to the Canadian Blood Services and the countless number of blood donors for the transfusions he received over the past number of months. Hughʼs family encourages family and friends to become blood donors as a way of honoring his memory.
Visitation for Hugh will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will take place Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, at a later date.
