John Y. Simms

John Y. Simms died at Veteran’s Unit of the Senior’s Centre in Corner Brook on March 17, 2014. As a young man growing up in Corner Brook he attended the Corner Brook Public School and was a member of the Church Lads Brigade. During WWII he served in the Royal Canadian Navy. Following his discharge he worked as a merchant seaman on the S.S. Corner Brook. After leaving a maritime career he worked as an undertaker for Carnell’s Funeral Home in Corner Brook. Upon returning from working at the Gear Paper Company in Toronto for six years he worked at Humber Motors Ltd. until his retirement in 1984. During his leisure time he enjoyed reading about pleasure crafts and ships, and spending time at the family cottage at Big Bonne Bay Pond. He was a long time member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 13. He is survived by his wife Muriel (Pike) of 67 years, their sons: Phillip and his wife Linda of Thornhill, Ontario, Barry and his wife Janet of Corner Brook, grand children: John and his wife Vanessa of Toronto, and William (Bill) and Chad of Corner Brook. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Frederick Pike and his wife Joan of St. John’s, sister-in-law Fern and her husband Gerald Murphy, sister-in-law Maisie and her husband Freeman Brake, and sister-in-law Betty Simms of Corner Brook. He is also survived by a large circle of nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Green, his two half-brothers: Max Simms and Hubert (Rube) Simms and his step-sister Pearl Wells. A family and friends gathering will be held at the home of Barry and Janet Simms from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 1 Country Lane, Massey Drive. Final arrangements are entrusted to Russell’s Funeral Home of Stephenville. At John’s request, cremation has taken place with interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Memorial United Church, c/o 34 Allen’s Road, Corner Brook, Newfoundland A2H 3T9 or to a charity of one’s choice.
