Damiani (Noulla, Noona) Georghiou

Damiani (Noulla, Noona) Georghiou

Passed on: March 25th, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce her passing on March 25, 2014 at Masonic Park Nursing Home surrounded by loved ones. Predeceased by her much loved husband Melis (Menelaos) in 1984. Leaving to mourn, her only son Paris (Janette) and two wonderful grandchildren Melissa (Dirk) and Andreas (Janice). Born and raised in Cairo, Egypt as part of a large Greek community, she married and moved to Johannesburg, South Africa with Melis and baby Paris in 1947. Paris immigrated to Canada in 1967 and as a result, Noulla and Melis left South Africa in 1970. After a few years in Cyprus, then in Greece, having been forced to flee to Greece after the Turkish invasion in 1974, they eventually moved to St John's in 1978 to join Paris and his new family. Like so many new immigrants to Canada, they started their own business, George's Store, a small convenience store at the corner of Pennywell Rd and Boncloddy St, a very colourful and vibrant neighbourhood where they were welcomed. Theirs was the first store in the City to regularly carry Greek feta, olives and other Greek delicacies. Closing the store in 1986, she began taking annual trips to Florida with the Happy Wanderers Group for a restorative holiday in the sun as many Newfoundlanders do. With the help of Drs. Bill Eaton, Isabel Martins and their team she lived life to the fullest and became a passionate and active volunteer at the Seniors Resource Centre and the Miller Centre. In September 2010, she came to live as a cared-for and loved resident at the Masonic Park Nursing Home. She thrived at Masonic where residents, their families and staff knew her affectionately as "Mama Noulla". We are grateful for the care she received both in her own home, and during her stay at Masonic. The recounted memories from friends here and around the world are dear to our hearts. Remembered as being larger than life, she displayed every feeling and emotion not just on her sleeve but way out in front of her for everyone to see. Noulla is missed. Cremation has taken place, interment at a later date. Visitation at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave, on Friday 2-4 and 7-9 pm, Saturday 2-4. No flowers by request. Donations in her memory may be made to Masonic Park Nursing Home. Please visit www.barretts.ca to sign the memorial guest book.
