James Arthur "Jim" Feehan
Age 84, of Dartmouth, N.S., passed away peacefully on March 28, 2014 in Dartmouth General Hospital, following a valiant battle with cancer.
Born in Savage Harbour, P.E.I., on July 16, 1929, he was the only son of the late Adrian Daniel and Jean (Garrett) Feehan. Raised in Mount Stewart, P.E.I., Jim was educated at Mount Stewart School and St. Dunstan’s College. He served in the militia as a teenager, enlisting in 17 (R) Armoured Regiment (PEILH) in 1943, and was discharged in 1946. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in June 1948, serving on many ships including HMCS Crescent, St. Laurent, St. Croix, Bonaventure and Assiniboine and at bases including CFB Brunswicker, Queen Charlotte and Shearwater. Jim was discharged from the Canadian Armed Forces in June 1973 with the rank of Petty Officer First Class. From 1974 to 1994, he was employed with Ruston Diesel (later GEC/Alsthom), Dartmouth.
Upon retirement, Jim enjoyed a third part-time “career” for almost 20 years, assisting his son, Gerard, in the development and operation of Citadel Coins. Jim enjoyed discussing current events and history, stamp and coin collecting, gardening and spending summers with Hazel and the family at the cottage at Savage Harbour. His eight grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Jim is survived and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Hazel Catherine (Hughes), and his five sons: Richard “Rick” (Glenda) Feehan, New Glasgow, and Rick’s children: Jennifer, Kayla and Keir Feehan; John (Ellen) Feehan, Dartmouth, and children Laura (Ian) Butler, Edmonton, Emily and Daniel Feehan; Joseph “Joe” (Cathy) Feehan, Calgary, and children David and Katelyn Feehan; Leonard “Len” Feehan and Gerard Feehan, both of Dartmouth. He is also survived by his sisters, Gloria Heikamp, Toronto, and Linda (Clarence) Murphy, Stratford, P.E.I.; brother-in-law, Tom (Mary) Picone of Virginia; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by infant daughter, Hazel Rhianne Marie; sisters, Aletha Picone and Sylvia Collings; infant great-granddaughter, Rebecca Hope Butler; and niece, Tamara Heikamp.
Visitation will take place at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, N.S., from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Randy Doucette at St. Thomas More Church, 15 Caledonia Road, Dartmouth, on Thursday, April 3, at 11 a.m.
The family would like to thank Dr. Robyn MacFarlane and the Cancer Clinic nurses at the Dickson Centre as well as the doctors and nurses of 3 West, Dartmouth General Hospital, for their compassionate care over the course of Jim’s illness.
