DALE, John Thomas “Jack” – 83, Truro. It is with deep regret that the family of John Thomas “Jack” Dale announces his peaceful passing, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born November 30, 1930, in Salmon River, Colchester County, he was a son of the late Charles and Eva (Dorion) Dale. Jack worked at the Nova Scotia Youth Training Centre for 34 years (1952 – 1986) where he thought of the children as his second family. He was an avid sportsman, playing hockey in the Truro Area for a number of years, and softball in the summers. Jack was a former member of Truro Curling Club and Truro Golf Club where he accomplished “4 holes in one”. He helped organize and coach Little League Baseball in Bible Hill for a number of years. His desire to help children lead to the flooding of the rink at the Bible Hill Central School; the children gave him the nickname, Mr. Freeze. He was given an “Outstanding Community Service Award” by the Village of Bible Hill in 2003. Jack is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret (Henderson); children, Carolyn, Penny (Peter) Neily, Jack Jr. (Sheila); brother, Charles (Florence) Dale; sister, Nellie Carmichael; sister-in-law, Catherine; grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan, Jaclyn, Christopher (Melissa) Whitmore, Emily Neily; great grandson, Daniel; several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Mary, Eva; brothers, Wilfred, Freddie. The family would like to thank Dr. D. Blair, Dr. S. Couban, Paula Sudworth-Adams, RN, Dr. D. Henderson and all the staff involved with his palliative care at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Jack’s family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Monday, April 28, 2014. Private interment in Bible Hill Cemetery at a later date. No flowers by family request. If so desired, donations in Jack’s memory to Colchester East Hants Hospice Society or Bible Hill Cemetery are welcomed.
