VAN TASSEL, JOHN HARTLEY – It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of John Hartley Van Tassel “Hawkeye” which occurred at the Loch Lomond Villa on Friday, April 25th, 2014. Born March 23rd, 1932, in Saint John, he was the son of the late Harold and Harriet (Lightfoot) Van Tassel. John worked for the Saint John Shipbuilding Drydock as a pipefitter throughout his career. He was an avid reader who enjoyed travelling and hunting. John loved a good cup of coffee and he especially loved and adored his late wife Margaret. John will be greatly missed by his daughters Glenda Wiley (Daniel), Lillian Brown (George), Linda Marr (Gary), Corrinne Bourque (Edgar) all of Saint John; son Edward Vincent Rooney of Calgary; brother Walter Van Tassel of South Bay; grandchildren Kent (Nancy), Lorie (Shane), Shelly (Rick), Tracey (Shawn), Gary (Angela), Alexander, Chase, Sherry, Nancy, April, Crystal (Jay), Ricky (Jennifer), Joshua, and Kelsey (Matthew); great-grandchildren Elyshia, Kendra, Kieron, Taylor, Jessica, Brittany, Caitlyn, Brady, Noah, Emmett, Matthew, Luke, Mikailyn, Ashlin, Michael, Amber, Chelsey, Jayden, Chloe and Kaydin; two great-great-grandchildren Maddie-Lynn and Carson Rohnan; brother-in-law Harry Dempster (Doris); sisters-in-law Avis and Ruth Dempster and several nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his wife Margaret; infant twin boys Ricky and Wayne, brother George, sisters Verna McBurney, Eunice Ritchie, Alma Scoggins, and son-in-law Bruce Davis.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation being held on Monday, April 28th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will take place from the Fundy Funeral Home chapel on Tuesday, April 29th at 11 a.m. followed by an interment at Cedar Hill Ext. cemetery. Donations in John’s memory may be made to the Alzhiemers Society of New Brunswick, Diabetes Association or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
