Bette Day

DAY, BETTE - Bette M. Day, wife of the late H. Nelson Day, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, surrounded by her family. Born 1928 in Plaster Rock, NB, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Dorothy B. (Lovelock) Knox. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by her son Harold; brother Howard and sister Doris. She is survived by her daughters Jennifer (Jim) and Joanne (John) both of Kingston; son Stephen (Diane) of Saint John; daughter-in-law Jacqueline of Saint John, cherished grandchildren Stephanie (Craig), Jessica (Ilango), Christopher (Jiashu), Bryan, Rosalind and Andrew; great-grandchildren Gregor and Megan; and several nieces and nephews. Although she worked part-time for H & R Block and Maritime Beverages in the past, the focus of Bette’s life was on her family and home. She was the matriarch and cornerstone of the family and held this role with great pride. She loved having her family around her and “Sunday dinner at Mum’s” became a family tradition. She was noted for her excellent cooking, especially her home-made rolls and pies. Her kindness and generosity to all shone as brightly as her beauty, inside and out. Bette was known for her superb sense of style, she was the true definition of a lady. She was an active volunteer for the Telephone Pioneers Hug-a-Bears and Heart Pillow Campaigns. Bette enjoyed playing bridge in an informal club with her neighbours in Champlain Heights and was always ready to be challenged by a crossword puzzle. She was also a past member of the Silver Falls United Church Choir and Keen-Agers group of Kingston Baptist Church. A sincere thank you to Dr. Sean Dolan, Karen Kearney and the entire oncology team of the SJRH, as well as the Kennebecasis Extra-Mural team of nurses for their care and dedication over the last five years.
Following cremation, visitations will be held at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424) on Friday, May 2, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A private family service will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens Cemetery at a later date.
