Olive Saunders

Passed away on April 24, 2014 at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony, Olive Saunders of St. Lunaire-Griquet in her 94th year. Olive was born on April 16, 1920 as the eldest child of William and Gladys (Hancock) Allingham in Cook’s Harbour. She married Fredrick Joseph Saunders of St. Lunaire on Sept. 2, 1940. As a result of their marriage, they were blessed with the birth of four daughters and five sons. They also raised two granddaughters. Olive’s hands were always busy, making clothes for her children, making skin boots (in the early days!), knitting, hooking rugs, making quilts, and baking. Her bread and pies were the very best! She also spent many hours in the fishing stage with her husband during the 30 summers they spent at Indian Tickle on the Labrador coast. Later in life Olive married Francis Sampson of River of Ponds and Selby Loder of St. Lunaire-Griquet. She was loved and cherished by all and will be missed dearly. Olive leaves to mourn her sons; Herbert (Evangeline), Rex (Irene), Ezra (Viann), Sherwin (Patricia) and Wade (Coleen); daughters Mary (Frank), Isabel Simms, Gladys Hedderson, Alma (Ronald), Maxine Peyton and Glenys (Havner); sisters Alma Stryde, Grace (Chuck) Milks, Triffena (Ernest) Rodgers, Laverne (Ralph) Colbourne and June (Ralph) Drover; brothers Basil (Irene), Edgar (Elsie), Horace, Stedman (Marjorie) and Llewellyn (Thelma); brother-in-law Eric (Rita) Saunders; sister-in-law Loretta Saunders, as well as 35 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, and a large circle of nieces and nephews, other relatives and close friends. Visitation was held at the Pentecostal Church in St. Lunaire-Griquet, from where the funeral service was held on Sunday, April 27 with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, funeral director.
