Nathan Merrill

MERRILL, NATHAN "NATE" ROY - It is with great sadness that the family of Nathan "Nate" Merrill, husband of Janette (Walton) Merrill, announce his recent passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital April 30, 2014. He was one of six children born to Roy and Rose (Fox) Merrill of Maple Grove and later of Marysville, New Brunswick. Nate served with the 7th Anti-Tank Regiment during World War II during the storied Operation Market Garden offensive at Arnhem Bridge, Holland in September 1944. The famous and tragic battle later became the basis of the book and movie “A Bridge Too Far”. When Nate returned to Marysville, veterans were offered building lots, so Nate bought one for ten dollars and built his first home. He settled there with his wife, Evelyn Lawson and daughter Leanne. He worked for Kitchen Brothers Wholesalers, the NB Liquor Commission and NB Power, retiring in 1981. Nate’s later years were brightened especially when he met his beloved “Nettie” and married her in 1992. Nate was happiest when gardening or fishing on the Nashwaak River with his grandson David. He was a quiet, gentle man, loved and respected by friends and colleagues. He traveled across Canada to visit his sister in Vancouver, but he was happy to return to Marysville and his garden and trout stream. In addition to his parents, Nathan was predeceased by his first wife Evelyn Lawson, brothers Ray and George, and a sister Eileen. He will be greatly missed by his daughter Leanne Scott; her son David Randall (Amanda) and his step grandson Jason McGivney. Left to mourn are his sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Szo and Irene Binion; stepsons Robert McGivney (Karen) and Stephen McGivney (Gina); great-grandchildren Morgan Randall and Kane Randall; sisters-in-law, Tina McDonald and Ann Jacob (Tom); brother-in-law, Tom Walton (Pauline); special niece, Catherine Sutherland (Gerald); and several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Nathan's wishes, there will be no visitation. Family and close friends will be holding a memorial service on Friday, May 9th, 2014 at 11 am in the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel. Rev. Ralph Irving will officiate. For those who wish, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. On-line remembrances may be placed at www.mcadamsfh.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to McAdam’s Funeral Home, 458-9170.
