The family of Carrie Groves sadly announces her passing. She slipped into the hands of God on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville.
She was born Caroline MacLean on May 10, 1921 in Florence, Cape Breton County, N.S., a daughter of William Campbell and Ellen (Dawe) MacLean. Carrie taught school for 36 years, teaching at Florence Elementary School and retiring as vice-principal. Carrie had been a member of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (IODE) D.W. Archibald Memorial Chapter for 25 years as well as a member of St. Matthew-Wesley United Church, North Sydney and a member of the Mary unit for 22 years.
Carrie prided herself on living her life in an orderly manner and did so with much personal dignity, spending the majority of those years in her beloved Cape Breton. Carrie especially enjoyed the summers spent at the family cottage near Ross' Ferry, Boularderie, Cape Breton as well as being an avid traveler.
She will be greatly missed by her children, sons, Murray (Sheila), Milton, Ont.; Bruce (Heather), Kentville, N.S. and daughter, Brenda Smith (Lorne), New Glasgow, N.S. Carrie has seven grandchildren, Blair, Bruce, Kim, Stacy, Michelle, Kelli and Russell and six great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kallie Allen, Kentville; Hannah Bennett, Stratford; Michael and Thomas Gambin, Kentville and Max Ceppi, Ottawa; her sister-in-law, Pearl; nieces, Linda and Nancy and two very special nephews, Lloyd and Don MacLean and the many nieces and nephews on the Groves side of the family.
Carrie was predeceased by her son, Blair; her beloved husband of 67 years, Murray; her father and mother, William and Ellen MacLean; her brother, Allen and wife, Kay; her brother, William (Pearl). Carrie, as she liked to be called, was the last surviving member of this branch of the MacLean family tree.
Cremation has taken place and interment in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines, Cape Breton will take place at a later date.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
