Reiner Clode, 86, died peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital Saturday, May 3, 2014. In accordance with his wishes and his interest in furthering scientific research, Reiner’s remains have been donated to the University of British Columbia. It gives his family great solace to know his death may benefit another’s life.
Reiner, born in Giessen, Germany, on December 23, 1927, was the youngest of five siblings. He emigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1952, where he began his own family, which he later moved to Staten Island, NY. Reiner served as president at Groz Beckert in New York City, and afterward founded Clode International Inc. to pursue several successful entrepreneurial Ventures. He and his family lived in Smoke Rise, New Jersey, before Reiner retired to the South of Spain. He ultimately chose the beauty of the Sunshine Coast and environs as his place to live, and first settled in Sechelt, and later Gibsons, where he enjoyed the environment and company of loving friends for the last decades of his life.
Reiner took great pleasure in world travel, good food, fine Scotch and classical music, and remained close throughout his life with his German relatives and heritage. Reiner was married to Christine Muth for 27 years, and is survived by his two sons, Christian Clode of Littleton, Colorado and Oliver Clode of San Francisco, California; his three grandchildren, Nicholas, Caroline and Micaela Clode; and two nieces, Gudula Heintzmann and Helgard Meyer-Pittroff, both of Germany.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Reiner’s memory to the Sunshine Coast Humanist Association (sc.bchumanists@gmail.com). His family would like to thank the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital, his doctors and nurses, and especially all his wonderful home care support workers who cared for Reiner so well.
