It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Rose Grant, a dear woman and beautiful soul, on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney.
Her gentle, kind nature and quick humour endeared her to all who crossed her path. Mary was a longtime resident of Rockdale Avenue, Glace Bay.
She was born Oct. 21, 1924 in Newfoundland to parents, Benjamin and Esther (Hynes) Bates, both of whom died before Mary was seven years of age. She was then raised by relatives in Sydney, Cape Breton. Here she met her husband of 49 years, John ‘Jack’ Grant from Glace Bay.
Mary is survived by her sister, Isobel; daughter, Jacqueline; son, John (Maureen); grandchildren, Ember, Shasta, Kiara, Logan, Parker, Emily, Megan, Daryl, Michael, Paul, and great-grandchildren, Aries, Cole and Penelope. She will also be greatly missed by Donnie McKenna (Judy) and family, sisters-in-law, Patsy and Helen, nieces, Anne Marie and Lynn, and other relatives and friends.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Jack, daughter, Brenda, four sisters and four brothers.
As a young woman Mary worked as a telephone operator for Maritime Telephone & Telegraph Company. She was an excellent bowler, avid reader, sports fan and she enjoyed knitting, Scrabble, board games and many different card games. She loved animals and was wonderful with children of all ages.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service will take place Monday, May 12, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment will be held in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

The family would like to thank staff of Wentworth Court in the Shannex Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility in Sydney River, for the excellent care they gave Mary in her last years.
