It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father John Angus MacNeil on Friday, May 9, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in East Bay, he was the son of the late Peter and Margaret (MacKinnon) MacNeil.
John was employed at the Sydney Steel Plant until his retirement. He was a transport sergeant in the Reserve Forces. John was an avid card player and enjoyed playing horseshoes.
He was a loving father and a wonderful caregiver with a great sense of humour which he has passed onto his his children and grandchildren. He loved and cherished his family and friends and loved the company of his pets.
John is survived by his children, Valerie (Stephen), Carol, Darlene (Derrick), Brian (Sharon), Gail (Kenny) and Karen (Brian); 15 wonderful grandchildren, Graham, Kenneth, Frankie, J.D., Karen Renee, Chris, Robert, Crystal, Blaise, Bryan, Amy, Tasha, Tammy, Chantelle and B.J.; his nine precious great-grandchildren, Austin, Amber, Bryden, Hannah, Francis, Logan, Sophia, Jacob and Clara. He is also survived by his sisters, Reyonalda (late James MacDonald), Theresa (Johnnie Axworthy), Josie, and only brother, Daniel (Julie); brother-in-law, Cecil (Carol) as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife and love of his life Vidy (Rudderham), sister, Mary Isabel MacNeil, foster son, Ralph, brother-in-law, James, mother and father-in-law Charles and Dorothy.
A special thanks to the staff of the New Waterford Heights, 4C, 4A and 3B of the CBRH and Dr. Peter Jackson for all their care and compassion given to dad.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 14, 2014, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Alzheimers Society, Diabetes Association, the Red Cross or to the SPCA.
