St. John's, NL, March 24 1932 - May 11 2014, 82 years - The Kennedy family has lost our gentle husband, father, father in law, grandfather, and great-grandfather who is now peacefully at rest. His long journey and struggle was more than his big heart could handle. He is predeceased by his father Samuel, mother Violet, sisters Joan and Gertrude. Leaving to mourn his wife Daphne (Coombs) of 63 years; daughter Sharon Ellard (Jim), and sons David (Karen) and Darrell (Cathy) Kennedy; grandchildren Kimberly Preston (Scott), Jason Ellard (Michelle), and Kyle, Kolin, and Keelin Kennedy; as well as his precious great-grandchildren who lit up his world - Jessica, Madison, and Isabella Preston, and Nathan and Grace Ellard who all affectionately called him Pop Pop. Also leaving to mourn his sister Vera Buck, sisters-in-law Audrey Dines, Shirley Norman (Frank), Rose Spurrell (Clyde) and brother-in law Eric Coombs (Anne) along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Our world was and is truly blessed with all the love, support and kindness he showed his family. Family was all he wanted and wished for and his wish came true when Darrell and Cathy moved home. For over 40 years Herbert worked two jobs, Imperial Optical and Marty's Restaurant. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the HSC who provided exceptional care and compassion to Dad and the family. Thank you also to Dr. Robert Woodland and Mary for your long time care. We would like to acknowledge the support of family and colleagues during Dad's illness, and comforting words from Jean Hall, Rev. Mercer, Rev. Courage and Rev. Young. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Monday, May 12, 2014 from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at St. Thomas Anglican Church, Military Rd. on Wednesday May 14, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Cremation to follow with a private burial. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to St. Thomas Anglican Church.
