PICTOU ­– It is with great sadness that we, the family of Sylvia Gregory of Pictou, mourn the loss of our loved one after she passed away from a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her death.
Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late Russell and Gertrude Alma (Pitts) Betts.
­Sylvia is survived by her husband and soulmate, Raymond “Labman” Gregory, married for the past 45 years; son, Paul Gregory and daughter, Kathy Gregory (Mike Ross); grandchildren, Ryleigh Anne and Isaiah Thomas, the lights of her life. She is also survived by her loving sisters, Virginia Mombourquette, Carolyn Betts, Julia Betts, Theresa Farrell; and brothers, Sidney Betts, Stanley Betts, and “Little” Johnny Walsh.
She was predeceased by her sister, Rita Arnold.
Sylvia lived her life to the fullest. She loved to travel, read and spend time with her family. She loved walking the dog Mardi, sharing a cup of tea with Raymond and eating her burnt toast. Active in her community, she was a member of Stella Maris Parish, CWL for 39 years, past member of the Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital Board of Directors and volunteer at the Pictou West Food Bank. She also taught Girl Guides and Sunday School. For a time she worked as the librarian for the Pictou County Barristers. She will be remembered for her wonderful smile.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral Mass will take place 1 p.m. Saturday from Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church, Pictou with Father Peter MacDonald officiating.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, The Lodge that Gives, the I.W.K. Health Centre Foundation, or the S.P.C.A.
