It is with much sadness we announce the passing Edward Alexander Smith. Ed passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Born in Big Bras d’Or on June 20, 1951, he was the beloved son of the late Albert and Theresa (Jessome) Smith.
Ed was a gentle man who enjoyed life. For most of his working life, he drove long haul truck. He loved his job. After illness forced him to retire, he liked to go out and visit Scott MacNeil, and look at cars and trucks. He also loved to go to Tim Horton’s, and visit with his many friends. Thank you for being so nice to Eddie.
Eddie was an avid volunteer with many programs; Food Bank, breakfast program, and wherever he was needed. He was also a member of the Kiwanis and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his two sons Michael (Tammy) and Daniel (Joann) Smith, his beautiful granddaughter Kayla Harris, and beautiful grandson Alexander Miguel Smith. Also left to mourn are his sisters Joan (Nick) Musbally, and Brenda (Brian) Marsh, brothers Francis (Genesta), David (Betty), Bobby (Kathy), and Jim (Karen) sisters-in-law Cheryl (Emmett) O’ Connor, and Deanna (Bernie) Buffett, and Jean McMullin, the mother of his children. Ed will be sadly missed by his little dog, Mia Smith, who went everywhere with him.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his second wife Sonja Smith.
We would like to make special thanks to Dr. Peter Poulos for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Eddie over the past 20 years. Eddie had such respect and high esteem for you. Eddie will be sadly missed by his family. Rest in Peace.
At Ed’s request, there will be no visitation. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday May 20, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the Bras d’Or Hall.
Donations in his memory may be made to St. Joseph Church Roof Fund, or to a charity of one’s choice.
