BAIRD, VERA - Vera Alice Baird (nee McGarrigle), 97, of Sussex, passed away at the Kiwanis Nursing Home surrounded by her family on May 16, 2014. Born in Cedar Camp, she was a daughter of the late John and Julia (nee Sear) McGarrigle, and wife to the late Gordon H. Baird. Vera and her late husband owned and operated Baird’s General Store in Sussex for over 31 years. She was a member of the United Church in Waterford and was active in the Lillian McDougall WMS at the Sussex United Baptist Church, as well with The Fidelity Class. Vera was a member of the Sussex Health Center Auxiliary, the Pythian Sisters, Prince Edward Chapter #2, and a member of the board of directors for “Heartbeat” which is an annual fundraising campaign for the Sussex Health Center. She also volunteered at the Tourist Bureau. Vera is survived by her daughters: Lynda (Melvin) Wilson of Saint John, and Sheila Larkin of Saint John; and son: Beverly (Mary) Baird of Murray River, PEI, as well as seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and many extended family members. Besides her parents and husband she was pre-deceased by her sisters: Jean Williston and Marie McKinnon; and brother Cecil McGarrigle. Vera was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
As per Vera’s wishes, there was no visitation held and a private graveside service was held in Kirk Hill Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of Sussex Select Community Funeral Home (506-433-2133). Donations to the Sussex United Baptist Church, Sussex Health Center Endowment Fund, St. Paul’s United Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
