We the family of D. F. O’Leary are heartbroken to announce his passing May 6, 2014 in the Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in Whitney Pier, Cape Breton. He was the son of the late John and Sara (Davis)O’Leary.
Daniel was a Cpl in the Canadian Armed Forces, 28 Central Ordinance Depot division in Shilo, Manitoba where he achieved the rank of jumper/rigger. Besides having 200 jumps to his credit, he trained other paratroopers as well as packing parachutes for the C.A.F. to be used worldwide. During his army career he earned many trophies and medals in sharpshooting, softball and curling. He was also a Golden Glove Boxing Champion. After his army days he was a jack of all trades employed as a welder, cook and bartender to name a few. Sometimes he would umpire a baseball game. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion 128 as well as a member of the Buffalo Club Dartmouth.
He is survived by his longtime loving companion Margaret Hiscock; sons Stevie (Paula), Tommy (Lena), Shawn (Peggy); stepson David (Jennifer); daughters Mary Jane, Patti (Don), Donna, Kathy, Valerie, Francine (Greg); brothers Cyril (Karen), Bill, Eddie; sisters Mary (Rod) O’Reilly, Betty, sister-in-law Helen Deveaux, Kay O’Leary and brother-in-law Harvey Morris; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren, many nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary Wowk; daughters Loretta in infancy, Josie; son Fred; sister Jenny and a brother John Jr.
A memorial service will be held 11a.m. Friday May 23, 2014 in T. W. Curry Funeral Home, Parkview Chapel. Rev. Paul K. Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Ocean View Continuing Care Center or a charity of choice.
A heartfelt thank you to the staff and caregivers of Ocean View Continuing Care Center 1909 Caldwell Road, Eastern Passage, NS, B3G 1B1, for the care and compassion shown during our fathers illness.
