SMITH, Captain Burnley Allison Enos, 82 of West Head, C.S.I. set his sails and slipped from the dock at Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Saturday, May 17, 2014. Born in Clark’s Harbour on August 12, 1931, he was a son of the late Marjorie MacKinnon and Alfred J. Smith. He was a carpenter by trade, but loved the ocean. Upon leaving the dock Captain Smith had a pocket full of stories, a sense of humour and a bag loaded with memories of having sailed boats from Cape Sable Island to Fort Chimo (Ungava Bay) NWT, Venezuela and St. Vincent, West Indies. With his Captain’s papers, charting knowledge and his engineer’s certificate Captain Smith sailed past Cape Sable Island Light Station where he had spent part of his youth with his family, who were light keepers. In adulthood this is where he acted as relief light keeper for a time. It was then on to Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York where he worked for a number of years as a launch Captain. From there his destination was open waters and calm seas. Captain Smith leaves behind his wife, Nellie (Smith) and their children, Carlene (Lee Adams), Shag Harbour, Veronica (Bourneuf Surette), The Hawk, Alice Williams, Clark’s Harbour, Dean, Ontario, Darrell, West Head, Jill (Calvin Dennis), North East Point. Prized possessions were his grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he loved dearly and who knew him as gramp or old gramp. Leslie Hopkins, Marjorie (Hopkins) & Mark Anderson, their son Iain of N.B., Myles Dennis & Kelly Cameron, their son Camden, Daniel Dennis & Tara Coleman, their children, Kierra and Ryder, Alexander (Alec) Smith of Ontario. He also leaves behind his sisters and brothers, Augusta (Gordon) Newell, Linda (Richard) Nickerson, Janelle “Snookie” Smith, Merle (Dianne) Smith, Winston Smith and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents as well as siblings, Laverne, Alfred “Bud”, Eugena “Jean” as well as several brothers and sisters-in-law and three nephews. Tides rise and fall but memories never fade. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. There will be no visitation and a graveside service will take place at a later date at the Old Kirk Cemetery, North East Point. Donations in Burnley’s memory can be made to the Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund. Online condolences may be sent to: huskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at www.huskilson.net
