It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Leroy Reuben Pyke, on Friday, May 23, 2014, at the Northside General Hopsital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines on May 20, 1939, he was the son of the late Reuben and Marjorie (Jenkins) Pyke.
He was a member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines. Leroy was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a retired coal miner, spending 32 years in the mines, before his retirement. Leroy lived a joyful life surrounded by family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, and watching his grandsons play hockey. Family was of utmost importance to him.
Leroy leaves behind to mourn his loving wife of 57 years, Clara (Nicholas) Pyke; his five children, Joan (Ernie) Bond, Brenda (Tommy) Foster, Kim (Alex) Forrest, Leroy (Nancy) Pyke, and Tracy (Jody) Groves; his dear niece, Wendy (Kenny) Bradley; his brother-in-law, Richard Jackson and family from PEI; his 10 grandchildren, Julia Ann Pyke, Laura Foster, David Foster, Sandy Forest, Natasha Forrest, Kenneth Pyke, Kyle Pyke, Mason Groves, Logan Groves and Kody Groves; and his 10 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Leroy was predeceased by sisters Yvonne Pyke and Joan Jackson.
Leroy’s family will welcome friends at J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, today (Monday, May 26, 2014) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will take place on Tuesday, at 11 a.m. in Carman United Church, Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. The burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Donations in Leroy’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, or to the Diabetes Association.
