Susan Marie Anne Duff of St. John's died peacefully on 23 May, 2014, age 59. Susan was the daughter of the late Rose and Gerry Duff of St. John's and the aunt of the late Mark LeMessurier. She leaves to mourn her loving husband Jack Botsford and son Alexander, and her sisters Elaine and Joanne (Mike Walsh), and brothers Aiden (Pinky) and Noel (Diane). She also leaves behind nieces and nephews Kirk, Karen, Nikki, Joanna and Saorise, many loving cousins and many dearly treasured friends. One of Susan's favorite expressions was "Show me your friends and I'll show you who you are" and her range of loving, loyal and deeply supportive friends truly reflects who she was. She made friends in all walks of life through her fundamental and total honesty, humor and generosity. Susan had a strong sense of social justice and devoted her career and a great deal of energy to improving conditions for people with mental illness. In the 1990's she was one of the primary founders of Mill Lane Enterprise and Evergreen Recycling. She strongly believed in "treating the person and not the illness" and fought to move people suffering from mental illness out of the institutions and into the community. While a very gentle and kind person, she sometimes had to don a different persona to battle bureaucracy and make progress, but her best friends and strongest supporters were the people she represented. Susan loved her garden and found a great deal of satisfaction in the beauty she created there. She planted new roses in memory of loved ones and before she died, planted a "Golden Celebration" rose bush, that will stand in her own memory. She was a funny, generous, gentle and brave soul, who will be deeply missed. At her request cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may visit the family at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday May 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Celebration of Susan's life will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 2 pm In lieu of flowers, donations can be in Susan's memory made to: the Dr. H.
