A Life Well Lived and Loved….
Fred passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. After his valiant struggle with throat cancer in 2009, Fred’s battle resumed in 2013 with Brain, Lung and Kidney cancer that spread to his bones. His strong will to live unwavering love for his family and prayers from friends and supporters carried him through an additional ten months of chemotherapy.
Fred was born on July 3, 1956 in Glace Bay to the late Naish and Connie (Murphy) Currie.
In 1974, Fred met the love of his life, Sheila (McPherson) and they married in 1977 and were blessed with three loving sons, Freddie (Tara), John (Cori Leigh) and Michael and three precious grandchildren, Colby, Keegan and the light of Fred’s life, Miley.
The oldest son of six, Fred had four beautiful sisters, Anne (Brian), Winnie (Darryl), Michelle (Allan) and Florence (deceased) and one wonderful brother, Naish. He held many great memories of going fishing and hunting with his Uncles, Donnie (Ralphie) (both deceased), Harry (deceased) (Monte) and Wes (Joan) and treasured his Aunts Carmie (John) and Margie (deceased) (Don). He also held very special memories of his maternal grandparents, Winnie (Ma) Murphy and Harry (Da) Murphy (both deceased) and paternal grandparents Guy Currie and Sara Currie (both deceased) and special Uncle, Greg Currie (Dolly) and numerous Aunts. Fred was also blessed with many loving nieces, nephews and cousins and shared a special bond with his niece, Bobbi-Jo.
He was more like a brother, than a brother-in-law, to all of Sheila’s siblings, Patsy (deceased) (Adrian), Margie, Joie, Ernie (Bob), Madonna (Joe), Billy and Cathy (Paul) and was deeply loved by his mother-in-law, Mary (deceased).
Fred was a proud coal miner for 24 ½ years and spent the last several years working as a screening officer at the JM Douglas McCurdy airport in Sydney. It was during these times that he forged long lasting relationships with many of his co-workers, whom he spoke of often and with fondness.
Fred’s signature gift of love, laughter and joking around will never be forgotten and will be greatly missed. He was a generous “soul” who gave to others freely and thought of others first.
In honoring Fred’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A mass in his honor will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Parrish with Father Leo Boone officiating. A celebration of Fred’s life will be held in the church foyer, immediately following the service.
